After crossing Dartmoor we stopped for a pasty and coffee at Moretonhampstead on the edge of the moor to ‘recharge our batteries’. While sitting outside with our coffee another cyclist appeared, clearly on a bit of a trek himself.
‘Where are you off to?’ I asked.
‘I am doing Land’s End to John O’Groats’ replies the Nicholas Crane lookalike.
‘Oh, so are we’ I excitedly tell him ‘when did you set off from Land’s End?’
‘This morning’ he innocently replies ‘but I am not making very good time because the weather is so bad’.
Not only that but he is heading for Bristol before the day’s end, although it turned out that he had started at 3am. He aims to finish it all in five days, doing some long distance time trial he says. Whoever you are, we wish you the best of luck, even though you did make our 11 day plan look somewhat feeble in comparison. And we all liked John’s idea of taking the guy’s map - strapped across his handlebars -and turning it upside down while he was in the cafe!
