I thought a few more words on one of the reasons behind this trip might be worthwhile for some of those who know me and not John and Paul. When I first signed up to this trip it was, for me, a personal challenge. Rightly or wrongly I never planned to do it as part of a charity raising event. I found out some time later that John’s intentions included the raising of money for the Motor Neuron Disease Association. This is a worthwhile cause in itself but for John there were more personal reasons behind this decision; his brother Andrew suffered from this debilitating disease. Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord and means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. It can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe and currently there is no cure.
Just two weeks before we started Andrew died as a result of his disease, making this trip all the more poignant. John has set up a charity website (http://www.justgiving.com/John-Stanley2) so if there are any friends or colleagues of mine out there who feel like digging into their pockets for a worthwhile cause on behalf of John then feel free. It would be greatly appreciated.
